How do I add PDF functionality to my application?

By Rowan Hanna

Issue 8 for 2005

One of the best things about PDF is its extensibility. Not only does Acrobat itself offer a lot of potential for extension via plug-ins or scripting, the fact that it is an open format means that 3rd party libraries and components can and do thrive. If that weren't enough, it's also possible to license the Adobe PDF Library to perform Acrobat-like functions outside of that application. The possibilities are myriad. For the purposes of this spotlight however, I'll focus on components and libraries that allow the addition of PDF functionality to standalone tools (i.e. not plug-ins).

PDF4NET and TallPDF.NET are both excellent examples of developer components written for a specific purpose -- PDF creation -- on a specific developer platform -- in this case, .NET. The PDF creation library PDFlib on the other hand, can be used in a wide variety of environments, and is well supported for integration into both desktop and server tools.

Glyph & Cog brings us the popular XpdfViewer component, which allows developers to add PDF viewing to their applications. One thing is for certain, the sheer breadth of tools can render the old "buy vs build" debate moot as far as PDF is concerned.

Watch this space! There'll be more on PDF developer tools in the coming weeks. Until next time, please browse PDF Store's PDF Developer aisle for the complete range of PDF development tools, libraries and components.
