Digital stamping enables an individual to add a multitude of notices and other verification symbols to their documents. This facilitates for tracking, security and verification. PDF documents specifically are often imprinted with information about the author, corporate logos and document status (such as "Draft" or "Approved").

The prevalence of stamping requirements in a variety of PDF workflows has bolstered the development of a great many stamping utilities. Nowadays, one is hardly restricted in what they may stamp a PDF document with, from standard text to custom graphics.

Adobe Acrobat enables users to add simple watermarks by importing a graphic of the user's choice. Dan Shea offers step-by-step instructions on how to do this over at Planet PDF. Furthermore, it is also possible to add a background image to your PDF documents, ensuring consistency when creating a document from multiple sources. For added power and flexibility, you may want to try a specialized 3rd-party tool such as ARTS PDF Stamper or ARTS PDF Aerialist. These are both plug-ins for Acrobat that offer the ability to stamp virtually any combination of text and graphics on to your PDF documents.
