	What is PDF metadata and why do I care about it? By Rowan Hanna PDF Store Support Team Issue 3 for 2005 While the term is common in industries such as the legal sector, "metadata" is probably not a term that most office users hear very often. Broadly, metadata is defined as being data about data, or information about information. In practice, metadata comprises a structured set of descriptive elements to describe an information resource or, more generally, any definable entity. In practical terms, this includes things like document title, search keywords, author name, etc. PDF metadata serves an important function, as it streamlines archive retrieval and helps to identify documents without laborious full-text searches. OK, so now we know why metadata is important, but how do we go about manipulating it? Well, the first way is from within Acrobat itself -- from the Description tab of the File > Document Properties menu item, it's possible to set metadata for an individual PDF -- however, using the 3rd party tool ARTS PDF Workshop users can set or modify these items for batches of PDF documents from an Excel spreadsheet. If you are looking to build an index of sorts, the XpdfInfo component from Glyph & Cog allows existing PDF metadata to be extracted programmatically, and for this functionality to be built into your own applications.
