Batch printing PDFs

By Rowan Hanna

Issue 2 for 2005

There are many circumstances under which you may need to produce multiple printed documents from PDF. In the simplest case of making several copies of a single PDF, it's only a single command away, via your viewer's "Print" function and the entry of the desired number. What about when you need to print a collection of different PDFs, however?

That's where 3rd party batch printing tools come into their own. Even with Acrobat 7's PDF Organizer, which allows users to highlight multiple files and execute the "Print" command, it will launch separate dialogs for each file. This can be a major nuisance if you just want to "set and forget" a large batch of documents to print using a standard, predefined configuration. In other words, you want the printing to occur silently in the background.

Since batch printing is such a common requirement, there are numerous tools that can help if you find yourself in need: from ARTS PDF Workshop, which allows users to print PDFs in batch from within an Excel spreadsheet to the command line based PDF Multi Print or SilentPrint PDF, which supports a watched folder interface.

Next week, I'll cover PDF document metadata, so watch this space! Until then, please browse PDF Store's PDF Management aisle for the complete range of batch printing and PDF management tools.
