Issue 20 for 2006

Leading PDF experts are convening in Iowa this month at the Adobe Acrobat® PDF Central Conference (www.pdfcentralconference.com), the first event of its kind to come to the Midwest. The agenda includes an impressive array of PDF experts, from Lori DeFurio of Adobe Systems to renowned author on all things PDF, Ted Padova.

The conference is geared towards a wide range of PDF users, virtually anybody that interacts with a PDF document at the enterprise level. There is a large emphasis on PDF forms technology, beginning with the creation of an effective form, right through to management of data capture processes. As discussed in previous issues of PDF Perspectives, the paperless office is becoming more feasible and more desirable, as many businesses shift their operations online.

The transition from paper to electronic forms can be one of the most jarring for an organisation going paperless. Ultimately, the process of transferring written information to a database is not so different when transferring electronic information. However, setting up a workflow that automatically collects, processes and routes data appropriately can be intimidating. Dave Wraight has written an excellent primer in PDF forms over at Planet PDF.

PDF Store offers an eclectic range of products designed to fit in to a forms workflow, from capturing client data to routing information back to a database. Keep an eye out for the next issue, where I will discuss the PDF forms workflow step-by-step.

Sticky notes in Acrobat
By Dan Shea
Perhaps the most intuitive way to annotate a PDF document is to add an electronic sticky note. While physical sticky notes are useful with hard-copy documents, electronic sticky notes are more efficient and provide a natural and familiar means by which to add and share comments on PDF documents without obscuring their content.
