File size and web-friendly PDFs

Issue 1 for 2005

PDFs have many uses, but one of the most interesting is as an electronic final-form. That includes everything from "flat" eBooks that are simply electronic reproductions of their paper counterparts to highly interactive PDF files containing rich media. What they all have in common is that, unlike printed materials, they can be delivered electronically via email or online. Sounds fantastic in theory, doesn't it? In practice, content authors need to take user bandwidths into account, and hence, final PDF file sizes.

This generally becomes a trade-off between the inclusion of sexy features and the trimming of file sizes for faster download. Some of Adobe Acrobat's native features can help a lot -- the File > Reduce File Size option and the more advanced PDF Optimizer in Acrobat Professional spring to mind -- but users wanting or needing more control may need to turn to 3rd-party software.

One great option here is a tool called PDF Enhancer from Apago. This tool allows users to set profiles that downsample images, alongside other standard measures, but its true strength is its ability for lossless reduction. Another tool of note is Quite A Box Of Tricks from Quite Software, which in addition to allowing the manipulation of all images in a document, can also process individual images. This is a very powerful option when you consider that it's possible to retain individual high-quality images while still cutting overall file size by downsampling those that do not need the higher settings.
Next week, I'll address the batch printing of PDFs, so watch this space! Until then, please browse PDF Store's PDF Management aisle for the complete range of PDF management and optimization tools.
